Are there any other Beatles fans out there who genuinely love the Yellow Submarine album? Anyone…?
I don’t really get all the disdain for it. Some people don’t even consider it a “real” Beatles album because there’s only 4 original songs by them on it. And the soundtrack orchestrations are considered “boring”, and apparently don’t even count as Beatles songs because George Martin composed them.
But isn’t George Martin a Beatle too? Don’t his orchestrations count? Considering everything else he did for them and for their music, I’d say they do. Plus, they’re wonderful tracks: whimsical, catchy, often epic, sometimes unnerving, and full of emotion - everything that a Beatles song should be. I just love them, and I listen to them as often as I would any other Beatles song. Though I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, which is fine. Still, I wish these tracks would get at least some of the respect they deserve.
Also, the ones that the boys did are great too, at least in my view. “It’s All Too Much” is one of my top favourite Beatles songs weirdly enough, and “Hey Bulldog” is fucking awesome. “All Together Now” is cute and fun, and “Only a Northern Song” is some great trippy weirdness (and features some good ol’ Harrison snark). They may have just been “leftover” songs, but c’mon, it’s The Beatles - even the songs they didn’t care about as much are still amazing.
In my opinion, Yellow Submarine is a worthy album. And it counts.
